This week, we learned about the main actors in the courtroom, the steps involved in a criminal prosecution, the crime control and due process models for how the courts function, and the concepts of ‘law on the books’ and law in action’. We also learned about the federal court system, the different types of jurisdictions, and the types of laws that courts use to make decisions. For your Unit 1 Complete assignment, write a narrative essay (minimum 1000 words, excluding source crediting) in which you address and discuss the questions and statements listed below. Use at least three scholarly sources and remember to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the READ and ATTEND sections in your essay. Cite your sources in APA format.

  • Explain each of the steps in the Criminal Justice Process from beginning to end, including the specific events or decisions that occur at each point in the process. Include in your discussion the main actors for each event, and the decisions or actions they take that impact the case at that point.
  • Select one particular step in the Criminal Justice Process and explain how that step is supposed to protect certain rights of the Defendant. Include in your discussion where that right (or rights) can be found in the law (“Law on the Books”) and determine if these rights are actually protected during this step (“Law in Action”).
