Zora Neale Hurston a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance wrote a essay in 1928 “How It Feels to Be Colored Me”, (File attached) in this brief, short essay, she addresses issues of color and her experience as a colored woman in America. After reading this essay, discuss the ways in which race impacted Zora’s identity.

And, thinking about identity, think about an aspect of your own identity, that is interesting, intriguing, even confusing or complicated and write about it. Discuss ways in which this aspect of your identity has or has not affected your life.

Example: I am a sister, daughter, niece, an African American, an educator, a twin, a friend, a womanist. I could choose any one of these groups to focus on for my response. For me I could focus on my experience as a woman of color. As a woman of color growing up in a majority minority neighborhood and having attended majority white schools for most of my life color and gender have impacted me separately.

Or, I could focus on my identity as a twin and the dynamics of growing up with someone I was always associated with. To this day most of my family continue to call me Twin. More to the point I can think of family members that have never referred to my by my name but only as Twin or girl Twin. I could also speak to my identity as a woman and the dynamics of my family which were supported by a patriarchal mindset. All these things I could write about and I want you to focus on one aspect of your identity while discussing Zora and talk about how it has impacted or has not impacted your life.
